Two Seniors Honored with 2025 Chancellor鈥檚 Awards for Student Excellence

Seniors John Christopher and Cristian Gilces have been honored with 2025 Chancellor鈥檚 Awards for Student Excellence (CASE) as part of SUNY鈥檚 annual student recognition showcase. CASE is the highest honor awarded to SUNY students who have best demonstrated academic excellence and leadership.

College Awarded More than $423,000 for Campus Forest Development

Governor Kathy Hochul last week announced $15 million in grant awards through New York State鈥檚 new Community Reforestation (CoRe) program, with SUNY Cobleskill receiving $423,092 to significantly expand its ongoing campus forest restoration initiative and further contribute to the 鈥25 Million Trees Initiative鈥 launched by Governor Hochul to recognize the importance of trees and forests for climate resiliency and community health.

 

Earth Day Marks Signing of New SUNY Oneonta-SUNY Cobleskill Lake Management Partnership

On Earth Day 2025, SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Oneonta announced a collaborative agreement providing qualified SUNY Cobleskill students the opportunity to earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree in fisheries science while simultaneously taking classes during their senior year at the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station to complete their master鈥檚 degree in lake management 鈥 accelerating dual degree completion in five years, rather than six.

 

NAMA Team Represents at National Agri-Marketing Competition for Eleventh Year

NAMA is the professional association for individuals and companies involved in the marketing of agricultural products. This year, our students developed a value-added ice cream product line made with citrus by-products, turning food waste into a sustainable, locally sourced treat. The product promotes upcycling and local agriculture while addressing consumer demand for clean-label ingredients.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Honors 2025 Excellence in Student Leadership Awards Recipients

The College honored 24 standout students this April with its yearly Excellence in Student Leadership Awards. The awards are governed by the Office of the Vice President for Student Development, and winners are selected by an interdepartmental committee of faculty and staff.

 

Woodsmen Club Overcomes Weather to Host a Memorable Meet

A challenge became an exercise in teamwork and creativity as SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Woodsmen Club hosted their spring meet on Saturday, April 5, despite a rainy forecast that forced a last-minute venue change. Originally set to take place outdoors, the event had to be reimagined in just 48 hours, as the Club worked quickly with College partners to move the event under the cover of a campus pole barn.

 

Associate Professor Kimberly Tarvis Earns the NACTA Educator Award from the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture

Associate Professor of Animal Science Kimberly Tarvis, M.S., has been named a 2025 recipient of the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Educator Award. The NACTA Educator Award is presented annually to a select group of individuals whose efforts, the professional society believes, represent the very best in agricultural higher education.

 

Landscape Students Shine at National Collegiate Landscape Competition in Colorado

Students from SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Landscape Contract (BT), Landscape Development (AAS), and Plant Science programs participated in the 49th Annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition (NCLC), held this March in Fort Collins, Colo. The event brought together nearly 800 students from more than 50 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada for a week of hands-on competitive events, networking, and professional development.

The Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill welcomes the public and its partner growers, producers, and small businesses for the 3rd Annual Empire State Entrepreneurial Expo on Friday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Prentice Hall. Vendor registration is open through April 21.

 

Corey Cherizard Receives Norman R. McConney, Jr. Award for Student Excellence

Senior Corey Cherizard (Richmondville, NY) is one of just 50 students in SUNY鈥檚 Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) to be honored with a 2025 Norman R. McConney, Jr. Award for Student Excellence. The award, celebrating its sixth class of awardees, recognizes outstanding EOP students for their academic merit and perseverance.

 

Cobleskill Auxiliary Services Director Kevin D鈥橭nofrio Joins Elite Military Dining Evaluation Team

D鈥橭nofrio recently completed a three-country tour as part of the United States Air Force Hennessy Travel Award program. Established in 1957, the award program is the oldest military food service award, originally created to provide educational opportunities to service members in hospitality assignments. It recognizes excellence in food service management, force readiness support, food quality, and more.

The Institute for Rural Vitality Awarded $2.6 Million by Empire State Development for Agri-Business Workforce Training and Value-Added Product Development

Through this funding, the Institute for Rural Vitality (IRV) will launch its Empowers grant program, expanding support for agri-businesses in Fulton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego, and Schoharie counties by providing technical assistance for value-added product development and by delivering related workforce development training at no or subsidized cost for qualified participants.

The KeyBank Foundation Makes $500,000 Investment to Help Create Opportunities for Individuals with Neurodiversity through the Key2Employment Program

A $500,000 grant from the KeyBank Foundation will help launch the Key2Employment program at SUNY Cobleskill, empowering individuals with neurodiversity to gain fulfilling, meaningful employment and careers, and helping to bridge the gap between the unique needs of learners and the demands of the job market. The program will provide valuable skills training, work experience, and job placement assistance to young adults, increasing their employability and enhancing their quality of life. It will also serve as a valuable resource for businesses and potential employers seeking to hire individuals with neurodiversity.

 

Dr. Amy Dechen Quinn Among 32 Higher Ed Leaders Chosen for AASCU鈥檚 Department Chair Leadership Institute

Professor Dr. Amy Dechen Quinn, co-chair of the College鈥檚 Department of Plant Science, Fisheries, Wildlife, and Environmental Science, is among 32 higher education professionals chosen by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) as its third cohort to attend its Department Chair Leadership Institute (DCLI).

University Police Secures Federal Grant to Purchase Patrol Vehicles

The award totals $159,000 and will support the purchase of three new SUV patrol vehicles, enhancing the department鈥檚 operational capabilities to serve and protect the College鈥檚 campus and community members. Two of the new units will replace older models while one will be an addition to the fleet.

 

Three New Members Appointed to SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 College Council

SUNY Cobleskill is pleased to announce the appointments of three new members to its College Council: Rev. Anna Blinn Cole, Lead Pastor at Cobleskill United Methodist Church (UMC); Theresa Heary, Chair of the Schoharie County Democratic Committee; and Marilyn Wyman, former Interim Executive Director of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware, Schoharie/Otsego, and Greene counties.

 

NYS DEC Partners with SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Oneonta to Construct Artificial Reefs in Otsego Lake

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 4 announced the completion of three new artificial spawning reefs in Otsego Lake, Otsego County. DEC, in partnership with SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Oneonta, constructed the artificial reefs to create new, clean spawning habitat for lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), a native coldwater species once abundant in Otsego Lake.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Recognized as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting

SUNY Cobleskill has been recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting. The ALL IN Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting recognizes colleges and universities for outstanding efforts to increase nonpartisan student voter participation.

 

Eighteen Students Take Campus Service Roles with SUNY鈥檚 Empire State Service Corps

Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul in May as the sixth proposal from her 2024 State of the State agenda, the Empire State Service Corps鈥攍ed by Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado and SUNY鈥攁ims to increase civic and public service opportunities for students by creating paid service positions for more than 500 students across the SUNY system. The program is funded by a $2.75 million expansion of community service endeavors.

The Institute for Rural Vitality Accepting Applications for its Value-Added Food Product Program

Applicants must be interested in developing value-added food products and bringing them to market in the Mohawk Valley. Accepted applicants will begin a free twelve-month intensive program starting in January 2025 with full-service support through December 2025.

SUNY Cobleskill, Maria College, and Bassett Healthcare Network Unite to Tackle Rural Nursing Shortage in Upstate New York

Beginning in January 2025, Maria College will expand access to its 16-month weekend Practical Nurse Certificate Program to the Cobleskill area. After passing the NCLEX exam, students will become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Future plans include broadening Maria鈥檚 Andrea Lewis Siek School of Nursing program to offer existing associate and bachelor degrees in rural areas.

 

Owner of Trollbok Farm, an Institute for Rural Vitality Business Development Bootcamp Graduate, Wins Empire State Development鈥檚 鈥淓ntrepreneur of the Year鈥 Award

Pamela Wik Grimm, owner of Trollbok Farm, has been named a 2024 "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Empire State Development鈥檚 (ESD) Entrepreneurship Assistance Centers (EACs). Pamela developed her business with assistance from the Institute for Rural Vitality鈥檚 Business Development Bootcamp.

 

Oct. 26 Workshop: New Ways to Bring STEM into K-5 Classroom and Boost Science Curiosity

SUNY Cobleskill is partnering with CreositySpace and the Indium Corporation to offer the first professional learning workshop for K-5 educators and administrators focused on using invention and innovation to leverage student creativity and curiosity in STEM learning. The workshop will take place on October 26, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the College's campus.

 

College Hosts its Annual High School Day: A Day of Hands-On Learning and Applied Knowledge Contests

SUNY Cobleskill hosted its annual High School Day on Friday, Sept. 27, welcoming more than 1,000 regional high school students to campus for a day filled with learning, workshops, and applied knowledge contests. The event offered students a firsthand experience of the College鈥檚 academic programs and facilities with insight into potential careers across agriculture and technology disciplines.

SUNY Cobleskill is ranked among the top schools in the nation across several categories in U.S. News & World Report鈥檚 2025 Best Colleges rankings. The College moved up the charts in key categories of Top Public Schools, Best Regional College鈥檚 North, and Top Performers on Social Mobility. College Partners with Rockland Community College to Launch New Histotechnician Pathway Program

SUNY Cobleskill is excited to announce a new partnership with Rockland Community College (RCC) to launch a new two-year Histotechnician program, offered within RCC's School of STEM. This program allows students to complete their core classes at RCC and finish their undergraduate degree through SUNY Cobleskill, on the RCC campus and online.

The Cobleskill Campus Child Care Center Receives Competitive USDA Farm to School Planning Grant

The College is pleased to announce that its Cobleskill Campus Child Care Center (CCCCC) is one of just nine New York grantees to receive a Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant from the USDA. The $43,000 grant, with support provided by partners, totals over $65,000 to fund a year-long planning process to bring a Farm to School initiative to Schoharie County鈥檚 youngest eaters.

AASCU Selects SUNY Cobleskill for Latest Student Success Equity Intensive Program Cohort

SUNY Cobleskill is one of eight colleges nationwide selected by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to join its fourth cohort of member institutions participating in the Student Success Equity Intensive (SSEI). This multiyear initiative is designed to help increase the academic success of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income students, as well as address the equity gaps these demographics experience.

 

William Henn Appointed Chief of the University Police Department at SUNY Cobleskill

Willam Henn was sworn in as chief of the New York State University Police Department at SUNY Cobleskill during a ceremony on campus July 11. He will assume duties from Interim Chief Frank Lawrence in overseeing the 10-person department and staff operating under the College鈥檚 Office for Student Development.

 

Second U.S. Patent Awarded for Inclined Rotary Gasifier Technology Invented by SUNY Cobleskill Professor

The gasifier, invented by SUNY Cobleskill Assistant Professor David Waage and supported by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York, is the first fully automated and portable carbon capture and harvesting system, producing biofuels, biopower, and soil supplements from almost any combustible material.

 

Study Abroad Program Highlights the Wild Side of Veterinary Care

Field education and personal growth were on the itinerary as 14 SUNY Cobleskill students traveled to South Africa this spring as part of the College鈥檚 鈥淰ets in the Wild鈥 program. The 15-day study abroad trip gives upper-level Animal Science and Wildlife Management majors the opportunity to explore career paths in veterinary medicine through real-world scenarios.

Dr. Ian M. MacDonald Appointed as Dean of the Faculty

SUNY Cobleskill announces the appointment of Dr. Ian M. MacDonald as its Dean of the Faculty beginning in the Fall 2024 semester. Dr. MacDonald will support senior academic administrators and the faculty in ensuring sustainable programs, identifying and encouraging new program implementation, and fostering alternative program delivery methods through which our students and campus will thrive.

 

Institute for Rural Vitality to Host Entrepreneurship Assistance Center Business Plan Competition Programs through Empire State Development Grant

The Institute for Rural Vitality has been awarded $80,000 through Empire State Development to host Entrepreneurship Assistance Center (EAC) Business Plan Competitions, starting in 2025. This funding aims to support and enhance the entrepreneurial ecosystem by providing resources and opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to develop comprehensive business plans.

 

College Welcomes Dr. Gary Z. Morris as Inaugural Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs

SUNY Cobleskill is delighted to welcome Dr. Gary Z. Morris as its Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, a new position at the College within the Provost鈥檚 Office. Applications Open for Three Meat Processing & Food Safety Microcredential Courses at SUNY Cobleskill this Summer and Fall 

The Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill is offering a series of four-week Meat Processing & Food Safety microcredential courses this summer and fall designed to give participants the knowledge and skills to immediately join the meat industry. The courses are open to all learners interested in a career within the meat industry, and qualifying students will receive a 50% discount on the course fee.

 

Institute for Rural Vitality Welcomes Two New Team Members

The Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill recently welcomed two new members to the team, allowing the Institute to expand its reach and further extend the resources it offers. Bennett Ashley joined the team in March as Program Administrator. Abigail Armstrong, Project Manager, joined the Institute in May.

SUNY Cobleskill Student Jacob Lujbli Wins First Place in Category at the 2024 New York State Business Plan Competition

Lujbli, a Business Administration major, presented his plan in front of a team of judges, ultimately winning First Place in the Products and Services Category from among over 340 other entrants. Lujbli developed the business plan through the College鈥檚 Steps for Success program, the first program of its kind among SUNY schools.

 

President Terenzio Honored as 2024 New York State Senate 鈥淲oman of Distinction鈥 from the 51st Senate District

The senate鈥檚 鈥淲omen of Distinction鈥 program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Receives $838,000 as Part of Historic Statewide Funding Increase Supporting Faculty, Staff, and Students Across All State-Operated Campuses

The total funding is further allocated into three categories across campus: $717,000 to support faculty and staff salary increases through collective bargaining, $100,000 to expand paid internship opportunities for students, and $21,000 to support research activity.

Campus Opens New Emergency Food Pantry for Students

SUNY Cobleskill officially opened its new Emergency Food Pantry for Students on April 15, an initiative made possible through SUNY funding allocated in September 2023, supporting student food security systemwide. The $1 million in funding for SUNY campuses was part of New York State鈥檚 historic investment in higher education approved by Governor Hochul and state legislators in the 2023/24 Enacted State Budget.

SUNY Cobleskill Students Score Silver at the 2024 North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge

Four senior Animal Science students took second place at the 2024 North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge, competing against some of the largest dairy programs in the nation at the April 4 鈥 6 event in Visalia, California. First and second place were decided by just a fraction of a point, with SUNY Cobleskill scoring an overall total of 81.0 to the first-place team鈥檚 score of 81.2.

Animal Behavioral Scientist and Autism Advocate Dr. Temple Grandin to Receive Honorary Doctorate at SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 106th Commencement

For the ninth consecutive year, SUNY Cobleskill is proud to be once again recognized as a 鈥淏est for Vets鈥 College through the Military Times鈥 annual rankings, a list that has become a go-to resource for veterans exploring their educational path opportunities. In 2023, the College ranked eighth among schools in the Northeast U.S., rising from its position of seventeenth in 2022.

Animal Science Students Take Home Top Awards at the 2023 Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge

Fourteen SUNY Cobleskill students competed at the 2023 Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge in Harrisburg, PA, from Oct. 12 through 14, with several bringing home top awards from the annual competition, including the prestigious Don Rogers Award for Exemplary Team Performance.

SUNY Cobleskill Introduces Bachelor of Science in Fisheries & Aquaculture

The College is proud to add to its list of agriculture and technology baccalaureate programs a new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Fisheries & Aquaculture, available starting Fall 2023. The degree program replaces the College鈥檚 Bachelor of Technology (B.T.) in the same discipline, with the B.S. label placing additional emphasis on the required ecology, chemistry, and biology components of the major.

 

College Receives $50,000 Mohawk River Watershed Grant Award from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced $600,000 in grants awarded to implement the goals and objectives of the Mohawk River Basin Action Agenda 2021-2026. The awards include $50,000 to provide streambank stabilization and prevent flooding along the banks of key areas of the Cobleskill Creek on the SUNY Cobleskill campus.

Early Childhood Studies Introduces New Minor and Upper-Level Course in Accessible Instruction

New in Fall 2023, Accessible Instruction provides opportunities to gain multidisciplinary knowledge and practical skills for delivering instruction to individuals with a range of learning, neurological, and physical motor challenges. The minor is available to students majoring in any of the College鈥檚 baccalaureate degree programs whose career ambitions place them in an instructional or community service setting.

 

Professor Doug Hammond to Serve as Director of the College鈥檚 New Northeast Regional Technical Training Center

Agricultural Engineering Professor Doug Hammond has been appointed a Director of the College鈥檚 newly established Northeast Regional Technical Training Center, helping to address the growing need for trained equipment technicians necessary to keep New York State鈥檚 agricultural, construction, and transportation fleet moving. The Center is made possible through a long-running partnership between the College and the New York State Department of Transportation.

 

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Student Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Earns 2023 All-American Award, Recognizing Record-Setting Fundraising Year

The award honors a record-setting year of fundraising for the club in which it raised more than $26,000 at its annual Outdoorsman鈥檚 Night Out event in November 2022. That money is pooled with other collegiate fundraising efforts and put toward wetlands and waterfowl conservation efforts across the U.S., overseen by the national Ducks Unlimited organization.

This designation will see the Institute receive $73,500 in grant funding for one year to support area entrepreneurs with business creation and growth, sales, access to financing, and job creation. Histotechnician Program Receives Heckscher Foundation Challenge Grant to Establish Training Programs in New York City and Rockland County

The Heckscher Foundation for Children has announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind workforce development program intended to create more than 1,100 full-time jobs for underserved young adults in New York State. The College is partnering with Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York University (NYU), Einstein, Montefiore Medical Centers, and Rockland Community College to establish NYC- and Rockland County-based histotechnician training programs.

 

Animal Science Program Produces Bull Calf Ranking Top Three in the World According to Jersey Performance Index

Through its Jersey embryo program with Select Sires, the College it has produced a bull calf ranking worldwide as a top specimen of its breed. Known as Grandslam, the calf's Jersey Performance Index (JPI) rating of 197 places him third for his entire breed based on desirable dairy cattle characteristics.

SUNY Cobleskill Bass Fishing Club members Ian Budzinski and Connor Mann have been crowned 2022 New York State Collegiate Cup Champions. At Lake George on September 24, the duo brought in a five-bass limit weighing 16.13 pounds to capture the trophy. Club members Luke LeBlanc and Thomas Sadekoski placed fourth in the Championship with 10.62 pounds.

SUNY Cobleskill is launching a new program in Cannabis Science, available to current students as a 16-credit specialization minor. The curriculum covers the complex process of cannabis production, management and cultivation,  breeding, laws and regulations, harvesting, extraction and more.

 

Ecological Restoration Program Awarded Grant to Establish the Cobleskill Creek Riparian Forest Trail

The Laura Jane Musser Fund has awarded an Environmental Initiative Grant of $29,200 to SUNY Cobleskill in support of the Cobleskill Creek Riparian Forest Trail. The project's goals are to protect and restore the riparian forests along Cobleskill Creek to enhance the ecosystem and to promote open space utilization for the College and the community.

Campus Pool Temporarily Closed for Critical Repairs

Students and Faculty Contribute Research to Empire State Native Pollinator Survey

Native pollinators include wild bees, flies, beetles, moths, and butterflies, all of which play an essential role in pollinating flowering plants, including native plants and wildflowers, garden plants, as well as cultivated crops. This project was a four-year, statewide effort to determine the current distribution and conservation status of a wide array of native insect pollinators in nonagricultural habitats.

Callanan Industries Gifts $25,000 to SUNY Cobleskill for Workforce Development Programming in Diesel Technology and Construction Machinery

The gift will provide workforce development assistance to students enrolled in the College鈥檚 Diesel Technology, Power Machinery, and Agriculture Engineering programs. The partnership between Callanan Industries and SUNY Cobleskill was fueled by a visit to campus earlier this year in which company leaders met with students.

 

Histotechnician Program Signs Affiliation Agreement with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Through this agreement, candidate students will learn on-site at the Mohs laboratory, surgical pathology, and cytopathology laboratory, working alongside histology technicians, Mohs technicians, Mohs surgeons, and pathologists in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Cuts Ribbon on $1.4 Million Dairy Processing Center

The Center houses fluid milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream infrastructure, with capabilities for High Temperature Short Exposure (HTSE) pasteurization, batch processing, homogenization, separation, and packaging. Students work alongside faculty and industry experts in the manufacturing processes of these products.

When a portrait of a soldier from the Second World War was delivered to our Office of Advancement with little to go on besides a name, the search began to find its rightful home. It's a story of strangers connected by the desire to keep family together and the goal of preserving history, some research, and maybe even a little luck.

SUNY Cobleskill marked its 104th鈥疌ommencement Saturday, officially conferring degrees upon more than five-hundred graduates of the Class of 2022. In addition to celebrating the academic achievements of students and their perseverance through the disruption of the pandemic, the College also awarded a SUNY Doctorate of Humane Letters to Kathleen King.

 

University Police Department Welcomes K9 Reyes

The nine-month-old German Shepard recently completed training and received certification from the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services in explosives detection alongside his partner, Officer Carlianne Ferretti. The team is now in the process of completing training to receive additional certifications in patrol, tracking, and article detection.

Meat Processing Microcredentials Offered at SUNY Cobleskill This Summer

SUNY Cobleskill is offering two in-demand, non-credit microcredentials in Meat Processing in May and September 2022. These microcredentials are held in the College's federally inspected processing facility. Registration is now open and limited space is available.

Kathleen King to Receive Honorary Doctorate at SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 104th Commencement

SUNY Cobleskill will award distinguished alum and renowned baker Kathleen King an honorary SUNY Doctorate of Humane Letters at the College鈥檚 104th Commencement. The honorary doctorate degree is the highest form of recognition offered by the State University of New York to persons of exceptional distinction, and in this case, an individual whose achievements serve as an example of SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 aspirations for its diverse student body.

Agricultural Engineering Department Receives $500,000 to Develop Workforce Training Program in Power Machinery

In collaboration with large, multi-location agricultural equipment dealerships in New York State, this program will deliver industry-recognized credentials and certificates focused on hydraulics, electrical systems, air conditioning, safety, diesel engines, and transmissions, addressing a lack of qualified technicians to service and maintain increasingly complex agricultural power equipment.

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Dairy Cattle Judging Team wrapped up a stellar season with a first-place overall finish at last week鈥檚 North American International Livestock Expo (NAILE) in Louisville, KY. The team of Erin Curtis, Abby Hatch, Emily Hatch, and Tesika Kilmer, coached by Carrie Edsall, won over seven other teams in the 2-Year Collegiate Program division.

 

Grosvenor Art Gallery to Exhibit 鈥淢idcentury Father鈥 by Artist Justin Baker

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Graphic Design program is excited to announce a new exhibition of photographic works by Troy-based artist Justin Baker, collectively titled 鈥淢idcentury Father.鈥 The exhibition will be open to the public beginning Friday, Nov. 19, at the College鈥檚 Grosvenor Art Gallery, with a special Artist Talk scheduled for noon. The exhibition will be on display through Feb. 27, 2022.

 

Men鈥檚 Cross Country Team Wins NAC Championship, Individual Honors for Stand Out First-Year Harrier and Coach

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Men鈥檚 Cross Country Team finished their conference season this past weekend, taking home both team and individual accolades from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championships. The Fighting Tigers posted a team total of 31 points to capture the league鈥檚 2021 team championship over a 10-team field on Saturday at Thomas College.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Receives $15,000 from the Ellucian Foundation to Support Students in Need

SUNY Cobleskill has been selected as a 2021 Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope (PATH) Scholarship recipient through the Ellucian Foundation. The PATH Scholarship program provides grants to higher education institutions to support students facing economic hardship. The College received $15,000, which will be distributed to 15 students at $1,000 each to help cover items such as housing costs, tuition expenses, and food.

Five SUNY Cobleskill students, coached by Assistant Animal Science Professor Dr. Caitlin Foley, participated in the 2021 Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge on October 14 through16 in Lyons Falls, N.Y. The Dairy Challenge is the premier dairy collegiate experience where teams of students apply theory to real-world dairy farms.

 

Therapeutic Horsemanship Program Receives Two Grant Awards to Enhance Veteran-Focused Programming

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Therapeutic Horsemanship Program has received two grant awards, totaling more than $100,000, to further enhance its initiatives focused on assisting Veterans and their families. The College will be offering its Therapeutic Horsemanship Veterans Program during Winter Session, Dec.鈥2021鈥痶hrough鈥疛an. 2022, made possible,鈥痠n part,鈥痶hrough a $90,886 grant from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Adaptive Sports Program.鈥

Assistant Professor Ben Weikert Receives Educator Award from North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture

Ben Weikert, an assistant professor of Agriculture and Animal Science at SUNY Cobleskill has been selected as a 2021 recipient of the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Educator Award. The NACTA Educator Award is a once-in-a-lifetime honor given to individuals whom the professional society deems the very best in agriculture education. Dr. Weikert was honored at the society鈥檚 annual conference, held virtually this week.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Offers New Trauma-Informed Practice for Early Childhood Micro-Credential; Curriculum to be Assessed by the NYS Association for Infant Mental Health

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Early Childhood Studies: Birth 鈥 Age 5 Bachelor of Science program, offered through the College鈥檚 School of Business and Liberal Arts and Sciences, is now offering a micro-credential in Trauma-Informed Practice for Early Childhood. Available to both current students and non-matriculated participants, the curriculum will be assessed by the New York State Association for Infant Mental Health (NYS-AIMH), an organization increasing public awareness and supporting the development of Infant Mental Health multidisciplinary specialists throughout our state.

 

Biomass Gasifier Project Awarded Competitive Grant from the National Science Foundation

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 rotary gasifier is moving into a new development phase with award funding through a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant totaling $255,879. The award was given jointly to SUNY Cobleskill, the Research Foundation for SUNY, and industry partner Caribou Biofuels, Inc. for the continued development and commercialization of the inclined rotary gasifier technology that turns waste streams into biofuels, biopower, and soil supplements.

SUNY Cobleskill Hosts COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic for Campus Members; Vaccines Administered by Students of College鈥檚 Paramedic Program

SUNY Cobleskill hosted a, on-campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic April 28, open to students, faculty, and campus community members. More than 110 single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines were administered by students in the College鈥檚 Paramedic program. The clinic was made possible through the assistance of SUNY and the Schoharie County Department of Health. Undistributed vaccines were given to the Department for public use.

SUNY Cobleskill Mourns the Passing of Dr. Stephen 鈥淒oc鈥 Mackenzie, Distinguished Service Professor

The SUNY Cobleskill community mourns the loss of Dr. Stephen 鈥淒oc鈥 Mackenzie, Distinguished Service Professor and a member of the College鈥檚 Animal Science program for nearly 40 years. Mackenzie was a much-beloved face on the Cobleskill campus, familiar to generations of students. He was an inspiration to so many of his friends, colleagues, and students, and his legacy will be felt long into the future.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Receives Donation of Horse Arena Footing from RecycleBalls, Made from Recycled Tennis Balls

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Therapeutic Horsemanship Program has received a donation of arena footing to add an extra layer of cushion and protection to the facilities floor. The product is a mixture of felt and rubber of used tennis balls, produced by RecycleBalls, a non-profit organization based in Burlington, Vermont. The donation totals 4,268 pounds of ground material, the equivalent of 33,000 tennis balls.

 

SUNY Cobleskill and the Center for Agricultural Development & Entrepreneurship Announce New Farm and Food Business Accelerator Program with USDA Support

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Institute for Rural Vitality and the Center for Agricultural Development & Entrepreneurship (CADE) announce the launch of their USDA Agriculture Innovation Center. The project builds upon their existing collaboration on the Mohawk Valley Farm & Food Business Incubator, a New York State recognized business incubator. SUNY Cobleskill Receives Grant from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to Reintroduce American Burying Beetle in New York State

SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Environmental Management Program has been awarded $140,026 through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service鈥檚 Recovery Challenge Grant initiative to reintroduce the American burying beetle into suitable habitats in New York State. The beetle was once abundant across much of the United States but, as of the early 1900s, was reduced to only a few isolated populations, or less than ten percent of its original range, and even these populations are now threatened.

SUNY Cobleskill is proud to present a series of virtual events as part of an upcoming exhibition with the Antarctic Artists and Writers Collective. Two SUNY Cobleskill Students Awarded SUNY Chancellor鈥檚 Undergraduate Scholarship and Graduate Fellowship

Two SUNY Cobleskill students, Heather Heckman and Catherine McAvoy-Pindar, have received the SUNY Chancellor鈥檚 Undergraduate Scholarship and Graduate Fellowship, respectively. Grants of up to $5,000 are being awarded to 2020 SUNY graduates who maintained a GPA of 3.3 or higher, and who are continuing their education at one of SUNY鈥檚 64 campuses. A total of 100 students are being awarded to start this fall 2020 semester. Awards are made as grants to the students to be used to defray room, board, books, technology, childcare, or other eligible costs of attendance.

Driftwood Press has announced that Leigh Ann (Annie) Christain is the winner of the 2020 In-House Poem Contest. SUNY Cobleskill Receives USDA Grant to Expand Development of Farm-Branded Dairy Products

The USDA announced this week that SUNY Cobleskill has been awarded a $490,883 Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) grant to expand the capacity of its Dairy Processing Center, helping to address diversification and profitability challenges faced by dairy producers in New York鈥檚 Mohawk Valley. The College received one of the 42 grants nationally in the 2019 cycle, only five of which were awarded to higher education institutions, including Cornell, Penn State, Chatham University, and Auburn University.

SUNY Cobleskill, one of the first higher education institutions in the country to offer the 12-week Amazon Web Services Certified Solutions Architect Preparatory Course, has opened registration for the upcoming session, beginning in January. Upon course completion, participants are awarded a dual SUNY Cobleskill/AWS Cloud Technology certificate, which can help qualify participants for coveted IT positions. Bronx Zoo and SUNY Cobleskill Announce Interdisciplinary Internship Agreement

SUNY Cobleskill and the Wildlife Conservation Society鈥檚 (WCS) Bronx Zoo are collaborating to make the zoo an affiliate placement site for students enrolled in the College鈥檚 Histotechnician Program. This is a unique new internship for a SUNY Cobleskill student that will be offered each summer. The selected student will complete a 10-week training program at the Bronx Zoo, gaining applied learning experiences in the zoo鈥檚 histology laboratory.

 

A Veteran鈥檚 Day Story

Emma Paden begins today鈥檚 session by outlining the measures visitors must take to ensure safe interactions with Jake, Mona, and any of the other horses and ponies taking part in the day鈥檚 activities. Beyond the safety measures, the class participants have mastered some of the finer points of grooming, handling, and leading. Since SUNY Cobleskill and Albany Stratton VA Medical Center launched a collaboration to bring Veterans to the College鈥檚 Equine Center for a weekly program, the number of participants has grown from two to closer to a dozen.

SUNY Cobleskill Awarded $1.9 Million Diesel Technology and Power Machinery Workforce Development Grant from US Department of Labor

A Diesel Technology and Power Machinery Training grant award of more than $1.9 million from the US Department of Labor is reinforcing SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 ability to develop skilled members of the workforce, and enhance opportunities for students. The grant will support initiatives in the College鈥檚 Agricultural Engineering Department, and aims to fortify the equipment distributor technician employment pipeline by establishing partnerships linking employers with technical educators and students. The resulting network will increase job visibility, create new opportunities for dealers to sponsor students, and lead to an overall improvement in the quality and quantity of Associate-degree graduates qualified to pursue equipment distributor technician positions.

 

High Schoolers Explore SUNY Cobleskill, Engage in Hands-on Learning as College Hosts Ag High School Day

More than 1,000 students and faculty members from nearly 50 secondary schools converged on SUNY Cobleskill Friday, for the College鈥檚 annual Agriculture High School (Ag HS) Day. Students from Western New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and beyond participated in activities hosted by all five academic departments in the College鈥檚 School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The day provides a chance for students to explore programs they may elect to pursue at the college level, as well as meet faculty members across areas of study.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Early Childhood Progam to Host Public and Professionals at ACEs Conference on Trauma-Informed Care

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Early Childhood Program will host the 4th Annual ACEs Conference on Trauma-Informed Care at the College on Wednesday, October 16. Presented by the Schoharie County ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Team, in cooperation with SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Early Childhood and Psychology Department, the conference will address the challenges that communities, schools, and organizations face in enacting positive change to understand trauma. Attendees will gain exposure to practical applications of trauma-responsive practices with resilience development strategies. The full-day conference runs from 9 am to 3:15 pm. Teachers who attend may earn seven professional development hours (PDH) through the Catskill Regional Teacher Center (CRTC).

SUNY Cobleskill will host an opening reception to 鈥淎fter the Storm鈥 鈥 an exhibit of original works created by local artist Kristen DeFontes on Thursday, October 3, at 4:30 pm in Grosvenor Art Gallery 鈥 Old Gym 200. Master the Art of Sausage Making at SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 One-Day Workshop

Sausage making is the focus of the first in a series of meat-specific workshops SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Office of Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) is offering, at the College鈥檚 USDA-certified meat processing facility. The intensive, one-day program on Friday, October 25 invites attendees to explore basic charcuterie 鈥 from the meat breakdown and selection processes, to stuffing, casing, and sampling. SUNY Cobleskill鈥檚 Chef-Instructor Mike Lapi and Meat Laboratory Manager Betsy Jensen will provide instruction.

SUNY Cobleskill Joins 19 New York Colleges and Universities to Purchase Large-Scale Aggregated Renewable Energy

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill is a member of the NY Higher Education Large Scale Renewable Energy (NY HE LSRE) consortium of 20 public and private higher education institutions for the purchase of large-scale aggregated renewable energy. The consortium represents one of the state鈥檚 largest aggregated purchases of renewable energy to date.

New SUNY Cobleskill Cybersecurity Bachelor of Technology Degree Program Will Address Increasing Global, Workforce Needs

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill President Marion A. Terenzio has been appointed Co-Chair of the Mohawk Valley Regional Economic Development Council (MVREDC), the Council has announced. President Terenzio succeeds Dr. Dustin Swanger, President of Fulton-Montgomery Community College, who served as Co-Chair since 2017.

 

SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers Athletics Announces Move to North Atlantic Conference

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill has announced that the College will be entering the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) as a fulltime member effective July 1, 2020.  will compete in 13 NAC sports beginning in 2020-2021, including Men鈥檚 and Women鈥檚 Basketball, Soccer, Cross Country, and Outdoor Track and Field. The Fighting Tigers are currently members of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).

 

SUNY Cobleskill Creates First Two Endowed Professorships in Response to SUNY Scholars of Excellence Challenge

Cobleskill 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill has created the SUNY system鈥檚 first two faculty endowments under the new SUNY Scholars of Excellence program, Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson announced Friday. The endowments serve to recognize the most gifted educators on SUNY鈥檚 campuses. The new endowed professorships have been established in response to the Chancellor鈥檚 challenge to create new faculty endowments, issued to all campuses during her State of the University System address in January.

 

Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill Invests in Future of Schoharie County Arts, Announces 2019-2020 Arts Fellow

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 The Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill has selected Cobleskill-based artist, furniture maker, and woodworker Dean Babin to be its first Arts Fellow. Babin will serve as a fellow of the Institute for 2019-2020, and will be awarded a $5,000 fellowship through the Institute鈥檚 Center for Arts and Culture. The fellowship officially commences September 1, and will run through May 2020.

Student-Driven Service and Leadership come Full Circle, SUNY Cobleskill makes $2,000 Contribution to Regional Foodbank

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill this week presented a check for more than $2,000 to the Regional Foodbank of Northeastern New York. The contribution, presented by student-representatives, is a sum generated by a series of initiatives spearheaded by the student-body, that include personal care, food, and money drives throughout the Spring 2019 Semester. The Regional Foodbank is able to purchase one pound of food for $0.16, making the $2004.85 total presented Tuesday sufficient for the Foodbank to purchase 12,530 lbs. of food.

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill is hosting , at the College Thursday, July 25, through Saturday, July 27, in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), and New York Grazing Coalition. SUNY Cobleskill 鈥 NYS DEC Agreement will Enhance Statewide Conservation, Add New Member to College Faculty

Cobleskill, NY 鈥 SUNY Cobleskill and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) have entered into an agreement to collaborate on projects for the conservation and management of freshwater fish and mussels in New York State. The five-year memorandum of understanding awards $604,000 from the DEC to support five distinct projects on which the College and DEC will work together.
